Wow,  I'm pretty excited.  I purchased a Lionel standard gauge Hiawatha engine and set of 4 cars off of Ebay last night for what I consider a pretty good price.  The seller said it came from the estate of a gentleman who didn't run his trains.  My question is this.  Does anyone know of any problems associated with this engine and car set.  I have the Commadore Vanderbuilt and it runs flawlessly.

thanks in advance,

The Hiawatha is mechanically identical to the Vanderbilt. I've had mine for several years and the only problems I have had were generic - a couple of tires fell off (fixed with superglue) and there was a bug in the TMCC board that caused the headlight to shut off at random intervals (finally gave up and wired it directly to the pickup). I rebuilt the smoke unit according to Mike Reagan's online video and that made it smoke better.

Enjoy!

I doubt it. They wound up with a lot of those sets unsold and dealers were blowing them out for 40% off. That's not consistent with a shortage scenario. More likely would be that they planned the class lights in the first place, the contractor screwed up and didn't put them in the first few, and Lionel realized the mistake and made the rest the way they were supposed to be.
