What engine blew you away the moment you saw it, fresh out of it's wrappers and box?

MTH's Premier GE Demo SD70ACe did it for me. By far, the strongest, immediate, visual impact for me. Too bad that I had to return it because a portion of the cab roof melted, due to excessively hot headlight bulbs. That was a looker!

You're right, I was referring to EMD's SD70ACe.

I originally thought MTH's new BNSF AC4400CW was going to be the top dog in my collection, at the time. I ordered the ACe, as a second choice. I only had the 2006 catalog to base my picks on, and those catalog shots usually don't do the final product justice.

I always liked Union Pacific's standard livery on MTH's ACe's, as well. At one point in time, I had a MTH scale wheels UP SD70ACe... another absolutely beautiful O scale model. She went back due to a defective speaker.

My dealer loved that unit, and he was a confirmed 2-rail guy. Said it made him reconsider the product options available. One of his customers saw the UP model after a new speaker was installed, and had to have it.

I'm seriously considering going for an UP ACe from MTH's new catalog. I'll probably go Hi-rail, if I do.

BTW, I'm liking that new WM ACe that MTH will soon have available. The Great Northern doesn't look to shabby, either.

A couple of dead give aways in this post for those paying attention. I'm in the train room myself having a few brews. It's all good, been kind of dead around here.

I'm assuming you like the white and blue AC version. I'd sure like to see that come around, again. I recall MTH stating that they destroyed their original molds, the one that their demo unit wore. I'd take the exact same livery, the one MTH previously used on their original demo ACe's, applied to the models they currently make.

BTW, I recall MTH offering a package deal... you got that cool looking DC livery, a box car; and a caboose. I should have jumped on that deal!

My Lionel Heisler really knocked me for a loop when I first took it out of the box. It knocked me for another when I fired it up for the first time and heard the RailSounds for the first time. Later, it completed the triple crown when I got a TMCC set and ran it under command control.

MTH's models of Bennett Levin's PRR E8's also wowed me when I got them home and on the track, as did Lionel's recent Legacy NKP 765, but nothing will compare to those three wow factors of my Heisler.

hello guys and gals.........
that would be my imperial railking challenger #30-1418-1 made in 2006, when took the engine out of the box,i REALLY loved those blacken driver rims and matte black finish on the boiler and the silver painted lettering and numbers. but i was surprised how heavy the engine is. it is my holy grail steam engine because everything works well out of the box and i have about 4 hours of run time so far so good.

i'm going in a completely different direction, MPC era 8775 8778 lehigh valley gp-9's i first saw them running on a small christmas time display in a little mall also had the life saver car in the consist i own all three the life saver car since 1979. i know theres a lot more details today and gizmos but these were just the ones i really had to have.

Kane, great thread. For me it was my 1st purchase of a postwar Lionel Santa Fe 2343 F3 and my Lionel Boston & Albany Locomotive, both shown here coming out of the mainline tunnel.

There are three locomotives that to this day I am so happy I bought.

The first was the MTH Premier 2-8-8-8-2 Erie Triplex. All the driving rod action and the smoking tender are fascinating.

The second was the MTH first issue Premier Big Boy. This has PS1 but I loved it so much I bought two more, a MTH Premier with PS2 and the Lionel JLC version that included a free Legacy System.

The third is the Lionel Acela. The looks and sounds are outstanding, exactly like the real one I rode in from Wilmington, De to Boston.

Honorable mention, only because I haven't run it yet, is the MTH Premier UP Coal Turbine. A beautiful monster on the rails! Also the MTH Premier and Lionel scale GG1's.

I could probably add a few more of the engines I bought and haven't operated yet.

I agree with you. It's the best ever from MTH.

#3 JLC Allegheny. Because its the biggest, baddest, heaviest & most beautifully detailed monster ever made.
Honorable mention;. Lionel diecast BNSF ES44AC. The nicest diesel made to date in Ogauge.

Thanks for joining in and sharing...

So far, peoples choices have been pretty spread out re: their preferences for the different types of motive power available, whether they be steam, diesel-electric or electric, and the various models in those categories...

Interesting, there doesn't seem to be an obvious overwhelming overlap, when it comes to our picks.
