Hi everyone, I am putting together a M.O.W. train for my layout. So far it consists of an MTH scale Railking Milw Rd SW9, a North East Trains track cleaning car, a 40' wooden gondola by Weaver with a Weaver MOW load (ballast & ties). I am waiting for my Weaver MOW Milw Rd boxcar and will be ordering MTH's Milw Rd Railking crane and tender from their 2014 catalog. When complete, I will post some pictures. Are any of you running or planning on running a MOW train on your layout? What if any other cars would you add?

I have plans for a more modern MOW train. I have all the pieces, some need modifications, I just need to get it all assembled.
My plan calls for a modern diesel, such as a SD40 or GP38.
2 MTH dump cars (of the divco type)
1 gondola, with a Case loader-backhoe riding on it
1 flat, with a JohnDeere excavater riding on it
1 flat, with panel tracks (scale track sections) loaded on it
1 modern caboose
I would really like the backhoe to have a grapple type attachment like this one, but I dont know how I would make that modification.
Have you seen how they get them up there?
That's insane!

Will it smoke like that as well?
Will it smoke like that as well?
Hope not. I've set off enough smoke alarms with trains already.
I have 3 MTH engines that I can use to pull the M.O.W. consist, a GP38-2, a GP60M, and a GP30. MTH BNSF crane and tender, MTH BNSF flat car with scale trax, BN gondola, and a Weaver TTX flat car with stakes to make up the consist. I may have a few other cars that I could use. I intend to make ties for the TTX flat car load. Oh, I forgot, I have a couple of Atlas BN hoppers, too.

Gilly, Kind of like what I have in minde, nice!
Matt, I see the wrecker and tender but what is after the diesel?
Sean, that looks real neat! Your flat car with the sprayers is very clever.
Flash, I'll stick with the wrecker car.
Thanks for posting those neat loading videos, Gunrunner John. Ah, the wonder of hydraulics,eh?
Those little hydraulic hoses & couplings and pump motors certainly can lift some
heavy equipment.
And good equipment operators also.
Hi Matt,
What cars in are in that ATSF MOW train? Do you have any more pictures of it?
thank you!
I'm currently putting together a 7-car Jersey Central "wreck" train based on a prototype from 1954. It's my first-ever custom-building/painting/detailing project. I started a thread here on the Forum to document my progress, and plan to update it periodically throughout the process. It's been fun so far! Click here to check it out.

The consist in the photo appears to contain:
- Two U-boats (I believe their C30-7's.
- Two heavyweight coaches. I presume one is a kitchen/diner and the other is a bunk car for the crew.
- A heavyweight baggage car, presumably for tools, parts and equipment.
- Your basic 250-ton 6-axle crane, which MTH nailed.
- A cut-down heavyweight boom/tool car.
- Three flat cars for panel track.
- What looks to be a waycar.
I have a set of Williams heavyweights which I plan to use, plus the MTH crane. I need to snag a couple of flat cars, but I'm sure I can find those pretty easily. I'm going to use my Proto-2 U25b's in place of the C30-7's until I can re-work my Proto-1 C30-7's. I may add some lights to the MTH crane.
I'm also thinking about making one in CNW as well as I have some suitable equipment, though the MTH crane should be black rather than yellow and green.
Here are some more photos:

Matt,
Very cool.....thank you!
A flatcar with a bulldozer or excavator
A flatcar with trucks
A flatcar with a section or two of track (The real railroads actually did sometimes make up ready-to-go sections of track to replace damaged sections - I've seen a photo somewhere)
A heavyweight coach or combine for crew accommodations (The Milwaukee repainted old passenger cars in boxcar red).

K-Lionel made an almost-correct model of a Milwaukee Road B&B car (a bay window caboose repainted in MOW boxcar red). It's a plain steel bay window body and the prototype was a ribside, but the paint and lettering are all correct. You might want to keep an eye open for one; they are kind of hard to find.

I like it!
Thanks again everyone for your replies. Southwest Hi, is that caboose from the two volume Milw Rd freight and passenger car books that you recommended to me? If so, I am getting those two books shortly. Where do you get your "wet" decals for the Milw Rd?
That caboose is not in the two-volume Morning Sun set. There's a color photo of it on page 30 of the new version (second edition) of the MRHA book on ribside cabooses. It has the same decoration as the K-Line one, right down to the road number, but it's a ribside rather than a plain-sided caboose like the K-Line. I'll scan and post the photo later when I have time.

Here is the prototype for the ribside caboose as a work train crew car. This is from the Milwaukee Road Historical Association book on ribside cabooses. I highly recommend the MRHA publications - they have done a series on Mlwaukee Road cabooses and a series on Milwaukee Road steam locomotives, as well as a color book on Milwaukee diesels and publications on the "Beer Line" in Milwaukee and other aspects of the Milwaukee Road.

Southwest Hiawatha, thanks again. I've got MRHA diesels (great book), most of their B&W steam series, the Northwoods Hiawatha, I subscribe to the magazine and am thinking about getting the Milwaukee Beer Line pub.
