Installing the new wheels can be an interesting experience if you don't have the right equipment. I have a press that allows the wheel halves to get centered while pressed on. A vise may or may not do that. I've built a couple of 'Toonerville Trolleys' (wobbly drives) in my time. The good thing about the electric drivers (vs the steam with the offset for main rod) is that you have a pretty flat surface to bear upon in the centers. If you can find someone that has an arbor press of suitable size (or a 'Hobby Horse' press like I have), you'll get good parallel pressure on the drivers as you install.

The tool that I have for standard gauge presses only on the centers, not the rims of the drivers (also allows quartering of the drivers for steam locos where one side is 90 degrees forward of the other side).

I also check to make sure there is no burr on the axle holes before pressing - it can create the wobbly effect as well.

The problem with a vise is that it is likely that the two faces may not be parallel when you crank down. I've heard of others that use a drill press with reasonable effect, but it's not really made for that job either.

Good luck with it.

Anybody got a 'basket case' E-2 I can buy? Have plans to paint in the Empire Builder scheme and do something different with the lead/trailing trucks.

Jim
