This is a Standard Gauge set I guess you don't come across too often, McCoy only made 25 of these sets, in 1985. Come to think of it, matching passenger sets are the rule in tinplate, not many matching freight sets of any description.

Wow. What's not to love. Great layout too. Thanks for posting.
I first saw one at Al Merris's a few years ago and loved it. There was a set on the Bay w few weeks ago and all I could afford to do was drool

Very nice layout. I like the use of operating accessories.
That is one beautiful set on a great layout..makes me think I should be backdating mine.

Bruce, I've taken inspiration from your tinplate layouts that you've posted photos of over the past couple years. Thanks! As for backdating, I never updated - the 1930's are the only way I know how to do trains!
hojack,
That is one of the nicest STD Gauge freight trains I have ever seen, congrats on a great layout and a very serious Great Northen Freight Train, simply incredible Tin!

Thank you for posting the video. Very very nice layout too! That is one of the best looking sets I have ever seen! I keep coming back to look at your video. If I may ask, where did you even find something like that? Great Northern lives on.
Really neat set. thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the comments guys. It turns out that the set from 1985 consisted of only the locomotive and 6 of the 8 cars, all of which are stamped "limited edition" on the bottom. The box car with the green roof and the coal hopper car were cars that McCoy had done previously in Great Northern. They add in to the set pretty well though, especially since the two-motor E2 is capable of pulling a lot more than 6 cars!
I think one reason it's such a striking set is that there really aren't more matching-paint freight sets in tinplate land. You can put together a purple MTH tinplate freight set, but what else?
mikemike, you know it's a good question; Steve Eastman is always showing us photos of the German tinplate that he keeps finding, and I think, that stuff never crosses my path. It's all out there I guess, randomly, intermittently, and sometimes very briefly.
Wow, great train and great layout!
Tin
