Hello, I am in the process of constructing a modest 15 x 18 layout powered by 2 ZW transformers. Would 14 gauge wire be adequate for the power feeds as well as to supply accessories and for the commons?
You might want to consider one power supply just for the track, and a separate one for turnout controls and lighted accessories etc. Because if those are all on one transformer building or street lighting will flicker when turnout controls activate...etc.
#14 will work for most railpower applications. For short wire runs such as drops connecting the track to a Bus run, #16 or even #18 serves well. However, for accessories #22 is adequate including to activate switch motors.
If one has a long reaching wire run and plans to run heavier railpower loads, i.e; two long incandescent-lighted passenger trains pulled by mu-ed twin motor engines operating in the same power district, perhaps #12 would be more appropriate. It is common to read of Forumites using 12 gauge Bus wire runs for railpower.
As noted above, separate power sources for separate applications is appropriate.
