I am trying to make a modern engine service facility. It will be primarily for ES44ACe and SD70ACe locomotives.

i would like to set up a sand filling area.  From what I can see these engines are refilled with sand from a top hatch primarily located at the rear of the engine.  MTH makes the 30-11040 sand tower and lionel makes the 6-14255 sand tower.  The MTH version looks like it is for older engines that had sand boxes located on the side of the engine.  Is this correct and am I better off using the lionel version?

The lionel sand tower has a top pipe. Is that to connect a fill pipe, is it a vent or simply a top hatch?

Where is the water refill hatches located on the newer engines? I think the MTH 30-11037 water and fuel refill towers will work but I am not sure if I should locate the water column at the front middle or rear of the engine
