The recent discussions regarding CMC engines and the CMC cars again being manufactured has bumped my curiosity. Has the tremendous amount of information on modern standard gauge trains been acquired by someone for the possible purpose of fulfilling Arno's goal of it being published?

Arno was so willing to share information. I would hope that in some way it could be made available for the benefit of both collectors and operators.

It's going to be a VERY big book - Arno had about 1 TB just in photos of all the trains he researched. The McCoy chapter was somewhere north of 50 pages by itself, and he planned over 30 chapters (not all will be so big).  Arno spent a lot of time photographing collections and stories from many of the original builders while they were still around. He told me he spent 3 solid days at Bob Thons (Roberts Lines, he also built the Harmon engines, made some Randall cars and Hudsons, and several other lines over 40 years). Because there were generally small quantities built by each builder, information was scarce and Arno collected a bunch of it. There are a few that troll this board that know LOTS too.

Jim,

When I headed up the SGMA group attending the WGHT show at Dulles, Arno came up from Atlanta and stayed at my house during the show.  During his visit Arno spent several hours photographing some of the unique Standard Gauge trains I own.  He was particularly interested in my collection of Richart trains and took numerous photos of the Milwaukee Road CHIPPEWA locomotive and passenger cars that Dick Mayer custom built for me.  He also took the below photo of what I initially called my "orange wall" but which Arno referred to as my "shrine" to the Milwaukee Road.  Look closely and you can see the CHIPPEWA locomotive and passenger cars on the second shelf from the top, just below the unique Richart McKeen locomotive and trailers, which Dick Mayer also custom built for me.

Speaking of Arno's many accomplishments...  Over the years he assembled a collection of Standard Gauge trains that few of us could ever hope to match.  However, recently, I've seen a number of items come up on E-bay that claim to be from the "Baars" collection.  For example:  About a month ago there were a number of Standard Gauge GG1's up for sale that the seller claimed to be from Arno's collection.  Does anybody know if this is legit ?  Or...  Is someone trying to capitalize on Arno's reputation just to make a buck ?

As Steve said Gary is legit and a really nice guy. I bought a few pieces from him recently. Super helpful and easy to deal with. I just got the original, unassembled Capital Limited CMC train from Gary. Except now, it's assembled and running on my layout

I saw Std gauge Santa Fe F-units being demonstrated at a train show in either Detroit or Chicago back in the early 80's.  I don't know who made them.

I know this has been floating around eBay for a while, not sure if it's the one you're thinking about.

As a follow-up to my earlier inquiry about someone claiming to have items from Arno's collection. ..  Since you guys vouched for that guy, Gary, and said he was Legit.  I decided t take a shot at owning something that was previously Arno's...  ( In this case, a pair of custom done Lionel 8E's upgrade to look like the American Flyer 4686 / 4687 / 4689 series locomotives ).  One of them is orange and the other one is green.   I figured it wasn't likely that I would win either of them, so imagine my surprise when I won BOTH of them.  These are beautiful and elegant locomotives, with a quality of workmanship that I can not help but admire every time I look at them.  ( No sloppy half-hearted kit-bashing on these babies )  Also, despite their obvious run time, these two locomotives were unmistakably cared for quite diligently by their previous owner.  I've already made room for them on my display shelves, and plan on enjoying them for years to come.   A fitting tribute to a great collector...!

Congrats on those. I was tempted.
