This accessory is typical of cantilevered style signal bridges. It uses colored signals for signalling a proceed, caution or stop condition.

Prototype Signals:
Color-light signals came into use around 1914. Three different colors are provided for signalling.Green (proceed), yellow (caution) and red (restricted).
The signal as shown in the MTH photo has the red lamp above the amber lamp. This is the same arrangement as used for "traffic" lights.
By comparison the RailKing #30-11024 3 over 3 signal has the green lamp over red. See attachment.
On my model I removed the small screw on the signal head, reversed the position of the lamps and reassembled the unit. Now my signal heads have green above amber.
