Just bought an MTH Pennsy decapod (30-1176-1). I’m planning on replacing the battery with a BCR, and I’d like to order the battery now so that when the engine arrives I can replace the battery and run it right away, but I don’t know which battery I need... is there a way to tell from the part number or am I going to have to wait until the engine arrives and open it up to see which one it takes?

You need the original BCR for 9V batteries, it's a 5V board.

GRJ's advice is dead on, you could also give them a call and tell them what you have coming and they will also tell you what one you need. Nice folks to deal with.
Ordered the BCR and I’ve already got a tracking number! That was fast!
Engine arrived today! The BCR won’t be here until Saturday at the earliest (usps...) so I figured I’d open it up and pop a 9v battery in it for testing purposes and found that someone already installed a BCR! A nice surprise!
It is a 5v board.
