Picked this up at the local train show yesterday. This is my first mth engine. It only has a whistle, can this be upgraded to have chuffing sounds? Is this only able to be run conventionally? Currently I have a z4000 and Lionel tmcc. The smoke unit doesn’t seem to be operating properly, can anyone help me out with a part number to replace it. Any information on this engine will help, thanks!

Is there anyway to test this smoke unit?

Since you have it out, you can remove the four black screws on the top where the fluid goes in. Then, check that the wicking is not burnt and hard. If this has been stored awhile, the wick will need a lot of smoke fluid to get started. The manual says 25 drops and then wait 15 minutes. Those need to be generous drops too. The wick should be tucked along the length of the heating element in the smoke fluid chamber too.

THat is a Conventional DCRU with whistle board.  No chuff, no integrated smoke, no battery, mechanical coupler.  PS-1 upgrade requires gutting and installing MTH 2 piece board as an option.  I have that model sound chip.

Or to the PS-32 steam upgrade.   So there are alternatives.

As far as smoke, there is a switch under engine cab is that on?  Lack of smoke can be simple issues and the smoke unit is rebuildable, unless it is the early seuthe model, in which case replace.  I have them in stock too.  E-mail in profile.  G
