MTH DCS handheld loss of control

First off, put new batteries in the handheld and see if that helps.

How old is your system?  Maybe the thumbwheel needs replacing?

Is it just control of the speed, or of all engine functions?

Regardless, try tethering the remote to the TIU with a 4-conducor telephone handset cable (the curly kind).

Batteries are new.  I'll try the tethering shortly, but the handheld is relatively new.  The TIU is one of the origonals.  Gonna look at the software in the TIU also as it is of a possible different version than the handheld.  Handheld is a newer purchase than the TIU.  If it works with the cable then what?

Then one or both of the transceiver boards in the TIU and/or the remote are loose and need to be reseated.

Thanks for your patience Barry, but I had to go play train before I could really answer your question.  Turned out it was pretty much everything.  Found a thread which refreshed me on how to open the remote and after pushing the transceiver board back in firmer and placing some foam rubber between the case and the transceiver all is now running well except for one known spot in the basement which has always presented a problem.  Answer to that problem is just don't stand there when running trains.
