First off I'm a noob so this may be old territory.  I used a layout plan from this forum by attaching an o 42 rectangle with an o 31 rectangle.  I placed them beside each other rather than one inside the other so if you can imagine a snowman without a head that is what we have.

I used o 71 switches connected into each other to link the tracks and keep things parallel.

So in my limited testing the caboose test car had sparking from the wheels on just one of the switches on the smaller loop.  All sections of that loop are hot.

My concern is that there may be a loose wire within the switch but being new I hope someone here can shed some light.

I have some rolling stock that also do this on RealTrax switches.  Mostly postwar stuff made before angled wheels.  I do have one lighted Williams caboose that also does this. It happens so infrequently that I wasn't too concerned about it, but it looks like the gap on the plastic guide to keep the wheels on the right path can be culprit. Some have closed that gap by adhering a thin plastic strip to narrow that gap.

I have some other electrical issues to sort out with the setup...another of the switches does not seem to be hot on all tracks until a car is touching the switch and the straight track then suddenly the connection is made and the whole loop has juice.

I will look into it further tonight maybe as I got these switches used and need to clean the tracks thoroughly anyway.
