I've been looking around for SD40-2 locomotives to custom paint.

MTH seems to have better variety in details in comparison to Lionel's SD40-2's.

My question is, for those who have seen many different versions depending on the roadname, which ones have the snowplows on the front, and which ones had the horns right next to the middle fans vs. the ones that have the horns on top of the cab roof? I'm mostly referring to the ones that have Proto 2 or 3.

Also, for the dummy SD40-2's, do the ditch lights below the handrails up front light up or not?

Hey Thomas, you would really have to zero in on a few specific roads to see what is particular to their engines like horn placement, snowplows, etc.. MTH has been pretty generic on their SD40-2s but lately some have been made without class lights on the nose. I have quite a few  MTH non- powered lighted engines and the ditch lights do not work. I did a few but adding a ditch light harness and plugging it into the cab light socket. Works fine.

Thanks for the advice Paul.

I ask this because I really don't trust the promotional images in MTH's catalogs to have the exact details depicted.

The ones I had in mind to custom paint as are from the film, Unstoppable - the SD40-2's numbered 1206, 7375, and 7346. All three have horns in near the fans on top and have snowplows.

Most mth locos that I have seen  do come with a snowplow in the box You can also purchase snowplows from Lionel parts or brass aftermarket parts.

Since you are looking to superdetail and repaint, I would suggest a Weaver models sd40-2 that can easily be upgraded wth ps3 or err tmcc. They come really cheap on the secondary market, Esp if you wait for several weeks after York and early summer.

The question you should be asking is which model is easier to strip off the paint and that would be the Weaver model or the Lionel model. The mth models have a lot of paint and clear coat so it's tough to strip.

PRR,

It sounds like a good idea, but I want to avoid as much of the extra lighting details as possible, and the Weaver SD40-2's don't look like they have operating ditch lights. MTH's ones do, and in the desired position vs. the Lionel models. I will however have to add the light on the nose of one to imitate 1206, and as Paul said, in one of the dummy units.

However, what you said about the paint I'll have to keep in mind...
