A family member has powered his track using a venerable ZW. He tells me that the engine powers up but does not move. He says that there is no crew chatter, bell or whistle. Can anyone help with this problem?
Thanks,
Norm

Hi Norm,
I run an MTH Std. Gauge Ives set using a PW ZW. The set powers up but does not move until the direction lever on the transformer is changed. It then operates as normal under conventional control. If I let the locomotive sit powered up without the transformer direction change I get engine sounds right away and crew talk after a short time. I get a whistle when the whistle lever is pushed but of course no bell. My set is PS2, so I assume that your family's set is as well? Is this locomotive new or has it run properly in the past? When it powers up do you get any engine sounds?

Norm,
Merry Christmas & Happy New year to you sir, there are a couple things he should check, 1 the battery in his Tin Plate Engine may need replaced, 2 he may have his center rail hooked up to neg instead of pos. Further if he has one of the very early Tin Plate P2 engines, the engine may run however without the DCS TIU the sounds may not initiate. I own a 263 Engine that operates in this manner. The ZW should not be
the problem.

I too run my MTH tinplate with a PW ZW, so that should not be the issue. Are we talking a Protosounds engine or a PS2 model?
NJCJOE,
Good question Joe, it does almost sound like this might be a P1 engine, which now has a lot of problems.
However he did say it was a P2, somebody might be mistaken however it happens.

Actually, the set is the O gauge Girl's Train with PS2.
Thanks for responding.

Turn the tender or engine over and look for a sound pot for conventional running. turn the screw. The direction button should make it move.
The engine powers up so there is no DCS on the track.
F&G,
You are correct sir, depending on the engine, he may have one of the engines that has
this set up. I took for granted that Norm would have already looked for this.

Thanks guys. I have passed your help on.
