I just watched the OGR video on this transformer. Do you still need to use the QSI power guard? If so these are hard to find. What would be the new substitute?

A TVS is more practical and much cheaper. I still have PowerGuards I bought far back in the day for about $85 each. TVS[Transient Voltage Supressor] is actually better protection against voltage spikes for about 50 cents each.
PowerGuards shown in photo as well as a few TVS.
ps: if you are using a TIU[track interface unit] for MTH DCS it has a TVS built in].

Thanks I do have the TIU
"flossman", sounds like a Dentist's handle?
flossman,
I have used the TIU with built in TVS for many many years, and never ever had a problem, I also use a set of 10 -7 Amp breakers on each one of my tracks between the transformers and the TIU, in this manner I have never ever had a problem and never damaged a modern engine either.

How did you ever guess. Thanks for your information. I will have no worries now. I hope anyway
Just out of curiosity. Is the spiking a problem with the Lionel ZW-L or does it need som protection as well
The spiking problem can occur with any transformer, regardless of age or design. The old PW iron core type actually may be less prone than some modern ones. This involves a lot of theory, more of a question for Dale Manquen or one of the engineers. The device being powered actually is what generates the spike. A solenoid or motor can be a big culprit but anything with inductance can generate a spike.
Here is how I add a TVS and breaker
