Kris,
I would frst disconnet the power from the track and see if the transformer returns to normal. If it does than you have a track problem. If not the problem maybe iwth the transformer. Others may chime in with other suggestions.
Break the problem down into small parts. Turn transformer off, look at how you wired the layout, is there a cross connection. Set up a test track, preferably on the floor, try to replicate the event. The easiest way to figure out the cause of the problem is to start as if the layout is brand new and the transformer is fresh out of the box. Let us know how this turns out.
Disconnect all wires coming from the transformer. Both handles have to be off on startup of the Z-4000 or the red light stays on and 40 volts appear on track 1. If the handles are off on startup and it still acts that way, then you probably have a problem inside with the gears or the potentiometer no letting the voltage go back to zero. Most likely the problem I think.
Thank you all for your reply.
Dear Joe
So in other words I have to open it up and take a look inside. Do you know of any MTH authorized repair shops in NJ?
As far as track 1 not working after the crash, did you lower the handle to zero before turning it on again?
Yes the handles stated zero and the when I placed the engine on track it took off like a bat out of hell.
Now I placed it on the test track this is what I get.
I tried to power up the transformer again now on a simple separate loop of track. Unfortunately the red light on the left was blinking and there is no power output whatsoever. I am sure that this transformer is not working.
Disconnect the transformer from any track. Make sure both handles are down in the off position and turn on. Lights should blink and LED should stabilize and read zero volts and amps? Does it do that? If not might have a zero adjust issue with the pot on the handle.
Though I am not sure how you got full voltage to track 1 with handle down. That does sound like an internal failure. G
I have the exact same problem on one of my Z1000, I called MTH and they gave me instruction on something with the potentiometer, however all seemed to look OK with it.

So it's still not working?
Thank you. G
Dear cjack the problem child is still acting up. Thanks for the info.
Dear Joe
What did you do to get it repaired? Did you do the repair yourself or did you have to send it to MTH? How much did it cost?
what is the serial number on the back and when you first turn it on there should the amp led should come on temparily with a date like 1 and the other led 23,does your transformer come on with that code or does it just power up and the red short light come on and stay on?
Alan
Send me an email maybe i can help you!

Kris, The Z-4000 is far more complicated then the Z-1000 controller. That is simple FETs and a TVS.
If yours is faulting it can be a control board or the Power board. They are not normally component repairable for a major issue like yours. G
Dear GGG
I have been speaking to Alan and Marty as well. Both of them stated to send it to MTH directly for repairs. I can see that is not a remove and replace type of repair but more detailed that has to be done someone who is trained in this type of equipment. Thanks for your input.

So it's still not working?
No not working, I will drop it off at MTH when I am up that way.
Dear All
Thank you for your help and suggestions. I called MTH directly and got a authorized return number and I am having them check it out and try to fix it. The nearest MTH authorized repair center is on Long Island and that is a driving nightmare. I have to go through 4 counties, two of which are part of NYC. What does one have to do and what certification do you need to become a MTH factory authorized repair shop?
you have to go to there school in Maryland and you just missed it there was one in October and august , but MTH usually won't sell you transformer parts . check your email I tried calling you but the number you left does not work, call me I left you my number ok!
Alan
Got it thanks, I sent it to MTH in MD.
Since they just had an MTH school/class just recently, how does one get on board for one of their schools, and do you have an idea what the cost is for the class. Is it at their facility in Maryland?

Don't you have to have an MTH dealer sponsor you before they will allow you into the MTH school?

You must be sponsored by a dealer, and the classes are free. If you want the test set(s), you have to pay for those. You're also responsible for travel and lodging during the class. The classes are indeed held at the MTH offices.
Thanks John. Do you know when the next class is scheduled?
That would be a question for Jeff at MTH, I don't know what their schedule is.
News update. First thank you to everyone that replied in my time of need. MTH was able to find the problem which they stated it is a this as a Control Panel problem and the repair bill is US$190.00. I am posting this for the benefit of other O Gauge member that might run into the same problem. With type of electrical equipment please first consult with a MTH factory authorized repair person.

OUCH!
What did it cost to ship that beast? Did you have to pay shipping both ways? I would guess that would be expected on an out of warranty repair.
Expensive repair, but at least they fixed it and you should now have a good transformer for many years to come. Hopefully it will be a long lasting repair.
On a side note, my wife ordered something a few weeks ago, it was pretty light weight (probably not over 6-7#, but came in a rather large, custom made box. Box was approx. 2 feet x 1.5 feet x 6 inches thick. Shipping was $37 and change. Wow! I can only imagine what a Z4000 would be.

How old was the unit and any idea why it would have went south?
That's is almost half the price of a new one. Electronic stuff usually fails new out of the box or they seem to work forever. Just wondering.
Dear GVDOBLER
This was a flea bay special I purchased a few years ago, before I joined the forum. At first when I purchased it I though I was doing something wrong and put it aside for closer look later on. This year was the first time I pulled it out and took a closer inspection and found out it was broken and not my fault. Buyer be ware was violated and now I have to pay to get it fixed. Since I have joined the forum I have educated myself with various train items and have ask a lot of questions before I do or purchase anything.
