This is kinda out of my area of model railroading. I model the 1950 and earlier. I do have some locos and cars up into the 1970's but nothing real modern. Then my grandkids come along and they love my trains but I wanted something they might recognize on my layout as they don't connect with 40ft box cars and 8000 gal tankers. So I start getting some more modern equipment. I buy two WbB Dash 9 diesels and reapint for CSX as that's what runs near their home. I was going to get 12-15 modern hoppers but that was difficult. So I went with Intermodal....not seen as often around here but modern for sure.

Learning about scale Intermodal I found that true scale units are costly and even traditional or Rail King size cars were not cheap.

Then someone posted a photo of his scratchbuilt Intermodal cars so I thought I'd try. I designed a car somewhat based on Thrall prototype. It's traditional size to go with the other cars I had already bought. I cut the basic body on a laser table from .040 plastic. Lionel roller bearing trucks (I have a BUNCH of them), a Selley brake wheel and Plastruct ladder stock are the only parts I used. I will apply the walk ways after paint and my own designed decals.

The container shown is a semi scale 20 ft container built so I can run two on the lower level of the car.  I have enjoyed building the car and now will cut out half a dozen more and my Intermodal train will be complete. I'll post more pics when I get this one complete.  THX

Yes.....yours were the inspiration for mine. I've built narrow gauge cars and some early 1900-1940 era standard gauge cars....but I had not considered modern stuff until I saw yours....I then sat down and designed mine in CorelDraw.  These have turned out to be a little easier really....less car to build!!! THX

Nice job Dave...car and container{s}! All stand alones or a few articulateds too?

I was set on the same time frame till my son saw Martin's homemade cars and stated we need some of those...ok, two so far- I cheated and bought them...got enough irons on the build fire as it is. I did, however repaint two of the containers in Burlington and REA. Puts things in better perspective for me that way.

BTW- what are you going to letter them?...TTX?...or at least one with an AMC badge on it?

It's a very old 25 watt machine. A very high end unit when it was new.....but it was a friend of the families machine. He bought it thinking he'd use it..( he was an engraver but never could wrap his head around a laser) ..never did and when he closed the biz I took ownership of it. I had intentions of making it into a biz....but major life changes put a halt to that too.  So it's one of those 'I fell into it' and it's a good thing as arthritis in my hands is making cutting out 10 or so kits accurately impossible.

But...yes....it is nice that I have a machine that turns a sheet of inexpensive plastic into a kit!! Ad that to salvaged trucks and I CAN afford a few of these cars vs the $50+ for even RK cars.   THX!

That is impressive and I am very interested in seeing your progress.  How about some photos of cutting with the laser cutter????  I think this is really interesting.

I joined this site because I am trying to improve my modeling skills.  The level of talent here is sometimes a little overwhelming.  But, members are extraordinarily open and helpful when asked.  Thank you all so much for your years of craftsmanship.

I used to think "I couldn't do that" too...till I tried it. It's threatening simply because you've never done that before. The above build is likened to building a box...you can build a box can't ya? Cut the pieces square, glue them straight and you could have the same results. Try it...one limits ones self to what they believe they can do untill proven otherwise - time to prove to you just how good you can be.

If I can do it....anyone can. I am 100% self taught....true I've been building models for 50 years....but I hold no special skills. My laser cutter helps me because of the issues I have with my hands. But if there is interest I will detail how I make a container, very simple, and you can start there. For less than $20 you can buy a tool that will help you build your own models.  Thanks for looking and the comments!

OK.....I think it's done. Maybe some weathering but I wait a week or two for decals to fully set.

Brake end of the car.  Selley details brake wheel. Walkways are just decals, drilling that many holes was not an option.....and cutting them with the laser would work...

but it costs about a $1 a minute to cut and walkways for the fleet would have cost a LOT!! I could get photo etched but again....cost. The decal walkways will look fine rolling by at speed!!!

I made the decals for my FURX Intermodal. FURX is an ex-employer of mine and I don't think they had Thrall well cars but they have lots of hoppers etc.....so I thought it would be cool. Besides...anyone can have TTX cars!!

I just copied most of the markings of a MTH RK CSX car I bought. They may not be 100% correct but some of these are less than 1/4" tall total!

So....one down.....a few more to go. If there is interest I will document how I built these in a little more detail. These are pretty simple cars. Some wooden 1920's era box cars are more difficult to build.  Thanks for looking....it's been fun!!! And that's my main goal!

Those decals look great too and the little ones keep the eyes busy...that's great!

Ok, no for about 10 more or so to go - and containers....better get crackin'- lol.

I'm gonna try and do a container how to ASAP......Need them for my fleet! The good thing is in WV, and many areas of the East, stack cars are run with only one container high as tunnels don't allow double stack.....so I need only half as many!
