So true. A couple of isolated observations that perfectly exemplify this: There were a couple of boys, probably around 11, 12 years old. One of the members graciously offered one of the boys his DCS remote and pointed out the long husky-stack freight train that this lucky child now controlled. The kid was so excited, moving around as the train approached, with his controller in hand, blowing the horn, massive line of smoke streaming out of the roof. His feet may not have even been touching the floor at that point, he was having so much fun. (And I will admit to some jealousy on my part, as this kid, with his short time clutching a DCS remote, now has more experience with DCS than I do!!!)
The other scene was of a younger boy who was confined to some sort of motorized wheelchair. I don't profess to know what his situation is or the particulars of his limitations. But he obviously has a tougher time of things than others his age. But here at the open house he had the ability to watch a fantastic train display and see model trains up close...there are lots of great viewing points around the layout for those who can't get up much higher than a seated position. Every time I passed by the boy and his family, he seemed to be all smiles, apparently greatly enjoying all the colorful trains that raced through the beautiful scenery.
One can only imagine what the experience must have seemed like, if only one had the ability to view something like this through their young eyes. It definitely is a great reminder of the true magic of model trains and how great a hobby this is.
