I wasn't able to find any building or building components to hide a basement column that is 7.5" x 7.5" on Korber's website, nor OGR kits. I need sides that are at least 8" but no more than 10" square. I really was hoping not to go the scratch building method. Anyone have recommendations on a building that is commercially available - I want to make it 28" high max.

Thanks.

Paul,

If you have access to a table saw, a few MTH buildings meet your requirement and you can "stack" them. Just cut on the sides (or the rear) and place them back together.

How about this one?

6-Story Building - The Brunswick
Product Number: 30-90016
M.S.R.P. $ 59.95
First appeared in: 2003 RTR Catalog

Features - Intricately Detailed ABS Construction
- Fully Assembled
- Fully Painted
- Lighted Interior - Unit Measures:8 7/8 x 8 5/8 x 15 5/8 - Operates On Curves

I'm not sure if the dimensions shown are for the base or the building itself. Maybe you can put two together to increase the height?
A recent ebay listing showed this:

RAILKING BY MTH ELECTRIC TRAINS

ITEM NUMBER 30-90016

"THEBRUNSWICK"

6 STORY OFFICE BUILDING - INTERIOR LIGHTED

MEASURES: 9 1/16" X 8 11/16" X 18 1/2"

I'm guessing the larger dimensions reflect the size of the base.

"I do have an idea how to do this by using one of our kits. Do you want full windows on each side, or are some sides more solid (many tall building had sides with no windows)"

Rich, ideally, I'd like to have windows on at least two sides, or three sides would be great. Which of your kits are you thinking would work?

Regarding the RK buildings...I actually have some Railking 6-story components left over from some kit-bashing. Conceiveably, I could use a band saw and cut out one wall per level and gut the interior beams to fit around the column. The challenge is putting the wall back on so it doesn't look awful.

I don't think Ameri-town or Pioneer kits will work due to doors on levels where I need windows, plus I am limited to 10" footprint, and I need a height of at least 24" max 28" for this to look halfway decent.

Paul, I'm no expert on RK buildings or their construction but from the looks of the 6 story bldg. posted above it looks like if the windows are easily removed you could remove one entire row (top to bottom) and then cut the section at the center line of the window opening (top to bottom). After you fit the section around the column regluing the windows in their openings should cement the section back together w/o any visual cut line. The very top and bottom sections present their own challenges but there probably is an area you can make one cut and fit the section around the column w/o too much visual error. a corner cut may be the best option.

I had a similar problem, needing a tall squarish building to go around a 7" sq. boxed post in the center of my 'city peninsula'.  At York, April 2012, the late (and sorely missed!) Bill Parisi attending the OGR booth showed my wife and I how we could take their new Midtown Hotel (appropriately named, I must say!) and a Bill's Place (also aptly named!!) and cut/combine them into a 6-story hotel that has at least 7" of clearance inside.

It's done!  It's great!  I need to add a picture to this response....which I'll try to do today.  My only regret?...I had hoped to share this success with Bill at the October York.  His passing was a real downer for me...as I'm sure for hundreds of others.  On the other hand, my wife and I feel blessed to have been given this very special meeting/project with Bill in solving this problem...and getting our 'city' back on track, so to speak.

As Rich Melvin suggested, there probably is a way to use Ameritowne products, as did I.  But, it sounds like 'the other' Rich, Korber, has a nice plan on the way for you.

Come to think of it, you are truly blessed...with all sorts of 'Riches' at your disposal!!

Good Luck!

Merry Christmas!

Alan GrAZIANO made a building to hide a basement support pole for me. Below are some pictures.

This pole was in the middle of an Oil Refinery so me made it liik like it could be a part of the refinery.

We made up a light weight cardboard mock up of the building(light tan color in the pictures) to check for clearence around the base of the building. We DID NOT MAKE the mock up full height.

The "POLE BUILDING" is made like it has a step in the building so that one section is taller than the other. The piece that hides the pole just slides into guides Alan made in the styreen. Good Luck.
