I don't see why you just can't apply scenery (ground cover, foam for terrain contour) and structures to the gap piece and then simply lift it out when you want to enter or exit. You could even eliminate rail joiners if you attach small locating wood blocks to the legs (and on the other side to the Mianne beams) which would align the plywood base and positively position the track. Then use a couple of wires to the track section on the lift-out. Alternatively, you could construct a truss bridge to exactly span the gap and mount it so that it could be simply by lifted out.

That Mianne rolling lift up is neat and it can be built to fit any size void.  Works well.

If you are looking for a lift out consider this method:

Due to the fragile nature of Atlas truss bridges, I build a tray of sorts on which to place the Atlas pile of plastic.  Than allows a brass dowel and brass socket to be installed at each end for the + & - of each rail feeding power. 

The micro switch turns off the last block before the void.

Each brass piece has a feeder soldered to it running to it's respective rail.  There are no wires involved in power supply.  For quite a few years there has been no problems with the connection.
