Took a chance on a really grimy, dirt covered boxcar with unique Strasburg RR imprinting on it. Turns out after gently rinsing and cleaning it with plain warm water and a wet cotton swab that what I thought was merely a covering of grime and dirt is more than that.

Car dates from the 70's or 80's and apparently had been custom painted a cream color and then decals applied.

Now that the dirt and grime is gone it's quite noticeable that the printed graphics aren't pad printed but instead were decals which have become slightly yellow tinted with age. I don't know if they have been sprayed over with a dullcoat or something similar but I'd guess they were since the water didn't lift them or otherwise harm them.

As I said though, the problem is the entire area of the decals, instead of being clear is slightly yellowed making it visually obvious and noticeable the boxcar's graphics are decals. These decals ar e really unique as multiple searches for them has not turned up graphics even remotely similar to these.. So what. if snything, can be done to restore get rid of the yellow tinge and restore the clarity of those decals original clear background? What do you suggest?

A picture or 3 would useful.

But, old decals are very difficult to "un-yellow", if not impossible.

Replacing with with new custom one will solve that clarity aspect, but then you will find that the painted areas under those old decals will probably not match the rest of the paint.

The simplest solutions may in fact be weathering to blend it all together and then decal.  Or, just weather it back to where the yellowing is part of the finish.
