I'm trying to build a controller for an operating accessory (the K-Line operating dairy depot). The original controller (now missing but picture pasted at bottom) had a sliding on/off button to power a conveyor belt and a second momentary push button to eject milk cans into a waiting car. I thought I could get a on/off button and momentary push button from RadioShack and wire them up but am clearly doing something wrong. I've posted a picture of how I currently have it wired and in this configuration the on/off switch causes the conveyor belt to work properly but the momentary switch only stops the conveyor belt rather than activating the eject mechanism. Any wiring experts out there no what I'm doing wrong?

The way you are wired each switch will short out the power from the transformer.

The on/off switch shorts it on the closed position and the belt runs when it is open.

The pushbutton is normally open and shorts it when you push it.

 

Take the red wires from the transformer direct to the 2 power connections.

They do not go to the switches at all.

Run a black wire from the transformer to each switch.

Run a second black wire from the other side of the slide switch to the Belt connection.

Run a fourth black wire from the pushbutton second contact to the Eject connection.

 

Now, just to make it confusing, you can put the switches in the red wires instead and run the black wires direct, the power won't care.

Think of it like a garden hose, you can shut off the valve at the start, or kink the hose at the end, either way, no water flows.

Thanks Russell. I rewired it as you described (and pictured below) but the problem remains. The belt works fine but the eject function does not. I even swapped the switches just to make sure the switch wasn't bad. 

 

I would assume at this point that the motor powering the eject mechanism is bad except there is a light inside the building which is wired to the power connection for the Eject terminal and it too does not work. Odds of the motor AND the light not working would be pretty slim. I think my next step is to open it and see what is wired to what and make sure there are no bad connections.

This weekend I took the depot apart and looked at the wiring. I've  been able to wire it so that the on/off button turns the belt on/off and also get the interior light to work. I also checked the can eject motor and it too is good. Only puzzle remaining is how to get the momentary contact button to activate the eject function. Below is a schematic of the depot and how I currently have it wired (note: it's actually a leaf switch, not a reed switch). Anyone have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? This shouldn't bee this difficult to fix and yet....
