Hey Folks,

I need some newbie level advice. I'm currently running a loop of Fastrax around my Christmas tree and sometimes we do a larger oval on the floor.  For the last few years I've been running with the "Lionel Powermax Plus" which is the transformer that came with my son's "Lionel Scout" RTR set in 2011.  The Powermax Plus looks like the CW-80 that is currently sold, but the Powermax Plus is only 40 watts.

It runs the Scout train ok with a few extra cars, but when I put on the 70's Lionel Amtrak train (Engine Plus 4 to 6 lighted cars) it really struggles and the light indicating power foldback constantly flashes.

Anywho, I'm on a fairly tight budget (around a hundred bucks, maybe a bit more if necessary), but I do want to buy something quality that I won't have to worry about.  I do eventually hope to do a layout with a switch or two, but I don't think I'll be needing any advanced controller systems.

I'm currently looking at the CW-80 and the MTH Z-1000.  Any suggestions regarding these, others I should look at or things I should look out for?

Annoying transformer.  It has a fan, for some reason, I don't want to know why, which makes noise, and when it stops making annoying noise, it stops working.  It is an unrealiable power source, for example I won't use it on my work bench, where I need to know it is putting out power to test an engine.   The earlier models have a remarkably bad reputation for failing.  A CW80 is best used as a doorstop.  With the power off.
