This may surprise you, but the best choice for painting the base coat is flat black. It is true that this commits you to a fairly thorough covering, but it is the best way to simulate the deep shadows that you always find in nature on a sunny day. It is the flip side of the common advice to end with dry-brushed pure white. Everybody agrees on the latter, but the former seems to not be widely understood.
