While in Vegas on vacation, we visited the Nevada State Railway in Boulder City and took a trip on their short line route in a period passenger car pulled by a newer diesel UP locomotive. They also had a couple of old steamers on display including ol' No. 35 - a 2-8-2 made by Baldwin. The story we were told is that the tracks we took were originally built to bring supplies and machinery for the building of the Hoover dam and never saw regular passenger service.

EMD GP30s were built between 1961 and 1963 so they are the newest kids on the block.  This one is certainly nicely maintained.  Those former SP Harriman cars could stand a paint job though.  Sounds like a fun trip overall though.  Anytime on a train beats time not on a train.

Nevada has a rich heritage of short line railroads.  Being in a neighboring state, I really should try and talk my wife into either doing a tour of the Nevada tourist roads or alternatively letting me go myself, so she doesn't have to.
