Paterson (NJ) Silk Mill Warehouse Shadowbox- Some Of The Possible Variations

Well it is official! The first S Scale shadowbox has been ordered from us.

At the suggestion of an S Scale modeler, we are adding a loading door as an option to the windows on the first floor of the Paterson Silk Mill. For the ultra-creative you could even put the door on an upper level and add a pulley overhead- very common on end elevations of Paterson mills. Your orders may now include the added option of the number of loading doors and windows that you want on the first floor.

If you want to use your Paterson Silk Mill with the warehouse doors at box car loading dock level, you will need to add your own plinth or foundation.

I have spoken with a couple of customers about window glazing. Clear windows are best used if you need to see the interior decorations. Translucent/frosted windows look OK but are much better when the building or floor is actually lit. Today we tried two gray Roscolux tints and I like the results. Look at the two 1st Floor windows of the Paterson Silk Mill (all of the others are translucent). What do you think? I like the darker one on the left for the 1" deep shadowbox in the unlit condition. We're glazing our new G Scale (1:32) prototype with the darker gray.

Also notice the new warehouse doors- a suggestion of a possible S Scale customer.

Here is our G Scale (1:32) prototype note that it is only five window columns wide. The overall size is 15" wide by 20-3/8" tall. We have put the new warehouse doors on the first floor, along with the regular door. We have used a gray acetate for the windows. The original O Scale prototype is on the left.

Couple of thoughts....

1. I really like the “wood” doors - I also like the setup you used on the G version... I would opt for the two left and two right ground floor doors being wood
2. I would also opt for all ground floor windows to be clear and lit - this especially includes the divided lights at the top of the wood doors (the grey or white against the wood is pretty jarring IMHO)
3. for the two central doors, I prefer the darker color of the left, but prefer the more door-like look of the one on the right
4. for the upper floors, I like your idea of not lighting all “rooms” on all floors, but, since I don’t decorate the interiors, the opaque windows are nice, and the grey tones down the appearance vs. plain white

 Just my two cents worth!!!

Paterson Silk Mill

The O Scalemodel features laser scored and cut elevation, window and door elements, and built-up laser scored/cut or styrene cornice detail, and is designed around two components. The prototypical full-width basic 4- story elevation piece measures 12” long by 13-1/2” tall and includes six columns of windows. The partial-width elevation piece measures 4-1/4” long by 13-7/8” tall and includes two columns of windows. The purpose of the partial-width is to provide a seamless connection between multiple full-width basic elevation pieces.

The original full-width basic elevation piece was originally designed with only windows on the ground floor. We have now integrated the option of having a door added to the middle two window columns (columns three and four). An alternate door option provides for a single, wider door centered between window columns three and four.

The partial width elevation piece was designed to overlap the end columns of basic elevation pieces to create a seamless elevation view when combining multiple pieces for a longer model. It also creates additional visual interest by having a slightly higher cornice and offset from the basic elevation.

At this time, the Paterson Silk Factory building may be purchased built-up and painted as a flat (nominally 3/8” deep) and as a shadowbox (nominally 1-1/4” deep). We are offering the model in 3-, 4- (prototypical) and 5-story heights. Full-width basic elevation elements may be combined for a longer overall model and the separate partial-width elevation element may be added to complete a 28-1/4” long building (or longer).

Now for the options:

The Paterson Silk Mill may be ordered with one of two window options, one with a single-height double hung window and the other with a pair of 2/3 height double-height with a 1/3 height fixed 4 over 2 pane.

Windows may be glazed with clear, translucent or Roscolux Gray acetate.

The Paterson Silk Mill may be ordered with either a brick or cast stone cornice.

The Paterson Silk Mill may be ordered with all windows on the first floor, a pair of doors in window columns 3 and 4, or a single larger door centered between window columns 3 and 4.

Warehouse doors are also offered as an option on any or all first floor window openings. It was also common in Paterson Silk Mills to have warehouse doors in an entire window column if there was not an internal elevator core.

As with all of our shadowboxes, the full-width and partial width elevation pieces have individual floors and ceilings, and are lighting ready for 5050 LED’s and a slot for a .312” square Evergreen Scale Models’ tube as a wire chase. We offer the shadowboxes unlit and lit.

Here’s our 28-1/4" 3-section Paterson Silk Mill shadowbox display model for York TCA. Shown with Roscolux gray glazing, freight doors on the first floor, cast stone cornice and 2/3 height pairs of double hung windows with 1/3 height fixed lite panel above. In the price chart above, it is the $260.00 version. We have three more "blanks". They can be custom built to your specs if ordered before noon tomorrow. After that, we’ll be assembling them as we see fit for York.

As with all of our shadowboxes there are individual floors and ceilings. The 28-1/4" model also has two interior walls that isolate the center section.

We have just a couple of "blanks" for 12" long, single section, shadowboxes at 3-, 4- and 5-stories tall. They also can be custom decorated for York pickup if ordered by noon tomorrow. 

Note that there are two different window styles shown. We can stack the freight doors in a window column. Several customers have already been ordered this way. A brick cornice is available instead of cast stone. The 3rd and 4th window columns in the left and right end sections can have regular doors instead of freight doors. Glazing options are clear, translucent or Roscolux grey.

This model will also be available as a building by special order.

Here's an idea of the variations that are possible with the new Paterson Silk Mill project. These are the single section version- 12" long. We now have two 28-1/4" blanks ready for a custom order.

The original prototype shows the two window options and the freight door option that was suggested by a (new) S Scale customer. Freight stacked in a window column are common for Paterson buildings.

There are a total of 20 SuperbrightLED's with 36" wire leads enclosed in 3 wire chases in the lit version.
