I bought some of the stuff Jack Hotwater auctioned recently. Here are some pictures in their new home. Anyone else here purchase any of his nice items?

Neat thread idea Jeff. No "zebra stripe" weathering there!
Might I also add, it looks great on your well done layout!
Great looking equipment, Jeff. Hope you get many years of enjoyment from those fine pieces of HW’s collection!
RickO, I couldn’t agree more regarding your “zebra stripes” weathering comments. This stuff is very well done!

Interesting comment. When I think of weathering I think of zebra stripe. Nice to see Jack has the skills to do a much nicer job.
Enjoy your new toy Jeff!!
I won his 3rdrail J3a super Hudson. Sadly it’s got issues I need to fix before it runs on my layout, nothing I can’t handle I’m hoping. It’s weathering job is fantastic

Post a pic or two, please...
I lost out on a bid for ~10 EMD prints of E and F units. Is there a list of buyers? I ask because there were duplicates of UP units and I'd like to buy one.
I have E unit prints for NYC, T&P, NP ; and, F units B&O, TMR, and NdeM, and would like more.
HW, if you read this and have others, email in my profile.

Sorry but, that was the very last of my vast collection of EMD lithographs.

In all fairness, I did/do not have the skills to do all that weathering. I've had a long time friend and fellow custom painter/weatherer & scratch-builder, doing my weathering since 1972, back when I was modeling in HO. He as always had the unique ability to take my explanations/requests plus extensive use of prototype photographs, and produce a model that is as close to prototypically correct, as most anybody I've ever met. Another modeler friend, GNNPNUT, has the same ability and, weathers all his own HO models.
Jeff,
I agree - awesome! I missed that Jack was selling his really nice collection; rats

Will do, I’m laid up with a bad back at the moment. Soon as I can move I’ll take some picks

HW, thank you for your reply, disappointing as it may be for me, personally.
Can I inquire through Stout and get a message to the buyer? Anybody?
FWIW, I never tire of these hanging on the walls; they do get rotated from time to time.

Yes, post some pics please!
I hear you. Pretty much every time I add a new locomotive to the roster I need to do some adjusting either to the locomotive or the layout. The bain of my exist is the 2 wheel lead trucks. I had to add a sleeve around the anchor post of the truck on the H10 to reduce its ability to twist and oversteer. Two-wheel leading truck adjustments might make for a good thread in its own right!
Also adopted a bunch of ggd baggage cars and mth rea reefers. Beautiful.
Shot a quick video too: https://youtu.be/02dH4wOx5zU
I am surprised there aren't more forumite replies. I guess the auction wasn't known to many here.
Anyway. In addition to the above I got a nicely weathered and Kadee'd set of GGD PRR P70 coaches (4), baggage (1) and combine (1).
As to the Burlington reefers, in the group of cars I got, 1 is Atlas, 2 are MTH and two I don't know what they are. Jack, do you recall what these two are? The one on the left (and closeup shown in second pic) looks like it is a kit build, like tin over wood. Anyone else have any guesses about these two cars?

I have/had no idea about any of this??

It was a Stout auction. I found out while it was happening (well, I think I knew beforehand somehow, but it didn't really click with me until a friend bid and then I took part). I had never participated in one. It was fun. It was "live" and you could also bid online in real time. I sort of got swept away with it. Once it started, it was moving right along at a quick pace. Something that could become addicting if not careful!

The first car is an Athearn (or maybe Varney) kit, as I recall. Picked it up at a show someplace, some years ago. The second car is most likely a Red Caboose car.
Anyone else have any guesses about these two cars?
HW,
Do you no longer have a layout?
Jack, thank you! I enjoyed your interview on Notch 6 and am looking forward to the follow up.

Correct! Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, except for one or 2 brass cabooses, two diesels (custom CB&Q Williams E7As and the Sunset/3rd Rail EMD SD7 demonstrator), and two steam locomotives (the Sunset/3rd Rail Western Maryland 'Big 6' 3 truck 150 ton shay, on a very custom modified MTH 2-8-2 for CB&Q), is all gone. After all the structures were removed, the layout was cut-up and went into the trash (many trips by the local trash truck driver, over many weeks).

Thank YOU. I'm also looking forward to the next "interview", and have sent Derek a number of "thought starters" covering 4449 (going back to the American Freedom Train days in 1976 & 1977, plus the 1984 New Orleans Worlds Fair Daylight trip, plus UP 844, and UP 3985).
Wow, wonder why Hot Water sold his trains and disposed of his super nice layout? I thought he was very proud of his work and superb detailing. The next question is, are Stout Auctions a good way to sell off a collection? Just Wondering? Either way, there comes a time for all of us, to say by to our trains....Happy Railroading.

I highly recommend you listen to the notch 6 episode with the interview of Jack.
I was looking for that episode but couldn't find it. Anyone got a link?

"Hotwater" as in Jack Whelan ... 4449 Jack?

That's just sad, just sad. I understand why you did it but still sad.

It's one of his better interviews, kept me engaged the entire length.
Kerrigan posted:"Hotwater" as in Jack Whelan ... 4449 Jack?
Kerrigan,
It is spelled Wheelihan, and yes from AFT/SP 4449 crew since 1975, i.e. "Hot Water". Given the name by the "Chief" himself, since I didn't live in Portland, I generally didn't arrive in town before a run, until 4449 was already fired-up.
Just found out that the "Central Connecting Railroad", is no longer. I'm sad to hear that reality has brought another great railroad to an end. I've watched the OGR video featuring Jack's layout, countless times. I love the concept to justify running almost any motive power you prefer. It's been an inspiration. I've studied the video & have used the basic layout in the planning of my next layout.
I wish Jack & family all the best for the future & hope another layout is on the horizon!

I agree. That is very sad. It was a wonderful layout. Jack, I hope you had many hours of enjoyment running it.
"hope another layout is on the horizon"
From the Notch 6 interview it is clear that for a variety of reasons, Jack will not be collecting, operating or working on model trains from now on. He will be helping others and participating in the forum.

The saddest of all is reason number one, the idea of being taxed out of your house...
I wound up getting a couple of engines from Hot Water's collection from Stout. As well as some PFE Reefers, REA express cars/reefers and a couple passenger cars. I am happy with what I got. All the engines run great.
