Good morning everyone,

I am looking at building a new 10 x 20 layout in my old shop. My shop is a detached 2.5 car garage I built for working on pro street cars. The shop is heated and water tight. I live in Western New York.

I no longer have any cars but, I  still have all of my tools and equipment. I have a lot of larger articulated steam locomotives and I have 80" and 72" curves for the 2 main lines. I have a 28" Millhouse turntable for the layout as well. Here is a picture of the layout I drew in cad. It has a single lane hinged girder bridge to enter the control area. I do have a scratch built coaling tower and an ash hoist that will need to be installed on this design as well. The top and left side will be against walls. I am looking for any guidance on design, I  like to run big steam and I enjoy switching and building consists.

Thank you,

You state that you enjoy switching and building consists.  The layout as published (which is OK) has very little provision for switching or building consists.  Where you have that very long lead to the TT you should be able to build a yard that would support these interests.  The center of the right hand loop is very empty and could also support some switching destinations.

Hi Fred....the car is too cool. Must have been a beast on the road. Not too many Nash's left out there.

There's a member here, Ken-OSCALE, who has designed many plans similar to what you are looking to do. I did a quick search and found one that you could expand and modify with larger curves to fit your steamers. This plan incorporates reversing loops as well.
