I am in the process of laying down a new layout--space is 4x8.  I have two sons, so each wants to independently control a loop with his train, but the oldest wants the ability to run the entire layout if his younger brother is not around.  I have a number of operating accessories: the saw mill, 164 log loader, and 97 coal loader.  The two loaders obviously present a challenge trying to create enough space between parallel tracks.  I developed a layout that seems to accomplish my objectives.  A couple of pictures and a schematic are included (red dots on the schematic denote where the center pin is a fiber pin).  I would love to hear some thoughts from folks on this forum--pros, cons, alternatives.

Hi Jeremy,

That's a lot of stuff going on in that space, but I understand the desire to have all of your operating accessories since the kids love that kind of stuff.  I drew a line onto your trackplan image that would effectively create two independent loops to run two trains separately and still be able to switch between the two of them in one direction.  Have you tried making a trackplan using SCARM or RRtrack or something similar? If not, I highly recommend creating a trackplan with all of your track sections and accessories so that you can see exactly where everything will be. That being said, the line I drew on your trackplan image may not fit at all since you would need two additional switches, but I put it there as food for thought.

As far as pros and cons go, I personally prefer to just watch my trains run in a loop as shown in a pic of my old 4' x 9' layout.  I had two loops connected with O-72 switches along with two sidings and had a lot of fun moving the trains around.  That being said, I had all the space in the center left for scenery; which in your case could be used for some of your accessories instead.  Some people might say that you have too much going on while others may say they like all the action.  I think you can definitely achieve a balance if you decide to simplify things a bit.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions!  I could talk trains all day!
