K-Line cars were all 40' wells, even though they were marked 48 (some of them). Lionel has the original tooling on their version of these, but as you likely know, the cars are all 1/2" short of being a true 48' scale inside the wells. I believe it has to do with where they had the end panels installed to accommodate the swinging trucks. 

All in all, they are different cars. It would be real nice if they would market a stand-alone 53' well car as opposed to another 48' car. The 48' cars are mostly all phased out in favor of the 53's.

I would doubt Lionel would invest in tooling for a die cast car up to the detail level and quality of these cars today, if they were to consider a 53' well car it would probably be a plastic model of lesser detail even the Atlas 53' triple well cars have plastic ends with a die cast body. The ideal car for Lionel would be a scale 73' centerbeam flat car at the detail level of their 65' gondola. JMO
