Received the new MTH premier P&LE caboose from Mr. muffins.  Obviously identical to the previous NYC version aside from the yellow grab irons.

Two cons, the brakeman is still facing the wrong way ( still looks as pale as a zombie )

And the markings indicating the bearings were repacked  a little late on 4-69????  are only on one side.

I'm aware the truck spacing isn't accurate though but I prefer the fidelity of MTH cabooses to Lionels.

As long as it doesn't catch fire like those previous cabooses I think i can live with it.

The markers are light pipes. Some paint the housings and leave the lenses unpainted to make them a little more realistic. I have started replacing them with Tomar markers.

I am a fan of the MTH 19000 series cabooses. The truck location is much closer to the correct  prototype.

Is the interior on these the same as previous releases? The prototypes were pretty spartan with just benches on either side.

The subject of the best NYC 19000 caboose comes along every few years. I have to agree with Bob that the 717 is the best example of a 3 rail caboose ever done but its still wrong on two counts. The trucks being archbar vs T section Bettendorf and the lack of truss rods.

First off is the real deal. There are three prototypes within 100 miles of me including one only 20 miles away, recently restored. see above. This one is located at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY. Note the truss rods and trucks.

For some reason Lionel, MTH, and Williams decided to use the semi scale 2957 pre war caboose for their reissues. All have the wrong trucks and all the trucks are too far outboard like the 2957.

Lionel did do a relatively close rendition of the 19000 underbody with is plastic caboose.

Unfortunately they got the roof grabs and ladders wrong.

I tried splicing Lionel diecast caboose to the plastic frame but the diecast caboose is longer and overlaps the end platforms. I have since returned the elements to their original forms.

This is an MTH RK dieast caboose with its roller bearing trucks removed and replaced with Lionel trucks in their proper position. Markers replaced with Tomar. Still have to get measurements for the truss bars.

As of now the only correct 19000 caboose is the one made by Mullet River. Also a few brass ones I may not be aware of. Kohs has said they will make one but at 5 years and counting I am not holding my breath.

Oh, interesting note the brakeman in the MTH RK cab is facing forward!

It looks like most of the images are missing.

Thanks Jim.  That is a bit of a mystery since they were in fact there when I originally posted.

Hopefully they are back.

What the heck did they do to the steps, looks like that thing would fly if you got it going fast enough? Totally ruins it the proportions.

Its due to the fact that most all of them made after the 717 have the trucks mounted to close to the ends. If the steps were prototypical it would need 120" curves to navigate.
