New transformer/controller for Polar Express Set

The MTH Z-750 will work. It will keep the smoke working too. It has a chopped sine wave like the CW-80. The Tech II will most likely have a pure sine wave and reduce the smoke output.

It's chopped - and very noisy(on a scope) - different than other transformers. No "bell" control on the Tech II, and although rated at 40 watts, they seem to put out quite a bit more than that.

You might want to look at the MTH Z-1000, rated at 100 watts. The Z-750 is rated at 75 watts, a bit less than the CW-80's 80 watts. If you plan to eventually use the add on cars for the Polar Express, you'll be glad of the extra power down the road.

 

 

I'd agree with Len. If you're going to get a new transformer might just as well get the extra power with the Z1000, I'm not sure you'd save much on the 750.

 

I was considering a new transformer for this years train display and was leaning towards the Lionel GW-180 but it's twice the price of the z1000.

You can find a Z1000 for as low as $85, the cheapest I've seen GW 180 available for is $210  with free shipping through one of the forum sponsors.

And don't forget the MRC. Pure some wave power. Both the single and the dual throttle models will give you the power to run the whole train. Make sure it says AC pure power and not those tech transformers.

I will be looking for a Z-1000 for sure now.  Gotta find the right deal.  I do have many of the add on cars for the set.  I think I have about 4 or 5 add on cars if I remember correctly.  Thank you all for the advice!!!
