My one spring trip, early April 2006, to the desert was interesting. Beautiful day when we landed in Las Vegas.  First stop was Zion National Park on another beautiful day, we were spending the night at Bryce Canyon, NP .  By the time we got to Bryce there was snow everywhere.  On to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, our hike to the bottom started with 8" of snow on the trail.  River elevation is very close to Phoenix elevation, amazing what 5000 ft difference in elevation can do.
Bryce Canyon April.

South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Desert Tower.

My sweetheart Dianne hiking to the bottom of the Canyon  South Kiabab trailhead.  April 6, 2006.

The snow quickly turned to red slop once we entered the Hermit Shale layer.

My butt, that stuff is really cold.   So much for designer hiking gear.  Someone mis-placed her footing.   We really know how to have fun.

As we lost elevation on our trip to the bottom, it warmed and dried out a bit. At Cedar Ridge, things got better, warmer, and we saw several California Condors.

Three hrs. later, about to cross the Colorado.  All the winter gear is packed away.

Home for the night Bright Angel Campground.  What a difference 5000 ft in elevation can make.

You just got to love the desert in the spring .  Link to the 2006 GC picture file,  Click on Slideshow upper left corner of web page.   Somewhere in that file are some very nice photos of Alco FPA's that service the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
