My MTH 2-8-8-2 started up and then crackled and no sound. I tried start up and again just crackle for a short period and no sound. Engine will run in DCS. I had the Boards replaced recently.

It's probably the speaker or the battery
I checked the battery and it has 2.5v. Is there a way to check the speaker. I did a sound ohm check to the red and white connections on the speaker and my meter beeped.
Try a feature Reset
Can't Hurt.
You can unplug the yel/wht wire plug for the speaker and do an ohm check. Should be around 4 ohms. The other issue is you could have blown the audio amp on the board. That can be repaired at the component level.
If you have another speaker even 4 or 16 you can plug it in for sounds. If you get sounds, replace the speaker. If still no sounds, the boards need to be tested and repaired. G
It may be a loose wire. My beloved Lionel Reading T-1 upgraded by Reading Steam Guru and Wowak lost all sound but still ran well. Prepared for the worst, I removed the tender body. I discovered a wire had broken off one side of the speaker. I resoldered it and all was well.
To check a speaker, just take a 1.5 volt dry cell and 2 wires, held to the terminals. When touched to the 2 speaker terminals briefly it should make a click noise. If it does the speaker is good, or at least it should put out sound.

Concerning my early October post ( No Sound). Up date. Speaker was fine and so was the sound amplifier. It was the smoke fan motor that turned out to be in B/O. Replaced and works fine.
Surprised the engine had speed control if the smoke motor was killing the audio. I have seen bad smoke fans cause weird sounds and loss of speed control, but not a complete loss of sound. Thanks for posting. G
