I was alerted to the existence of this sound clip on YouTube. The individual featured is Mr. Daniel Simmons who served as an announcer at New York Penn Station for many years. His style was unmistakable and, as regular passenger during his tenure, I frequently spent extra time in the waiting room listening to him reel off station stops prior to boarding my own train. I’m sure other forum participants recall hearing him when commuting or on those great trips into the city to partake in the multitude of railroad hobby activities once found in Manhattan.

This recording was made as part of an interview done for Passenger Train Journal magazine shortly before Mr. Simmons retired in 1994. This is a rare privilege to listen to a true railroad legend. His routine for the Crescent is one for the ages.

Enjoy,

Nice recording, Bob.  Sure wish the destinations were those that were for the part of the country I could use.  And speaking of station sounds, I would really like to see an accessory that plays train announcements through station speakers, not through the locomotive on a visiting passenger train.  MTH has their station sounds, although no where near as authentic as your recording, for a particular train on a particular route, but the engines shouldn't talk; the stations should!

Doesn't someone make such an accessory; a recorder/player and miniature speaker, operated either automatically by the  train itself or remote control by an operator?  It wouldn't be difficult to have different recordings activated by different trains so that the sound would have more variety and be more accurate.  And, if the recordings would sound like Danial Simmons or another long time train announcer, it would be all the better.
