O SCALE MODEL OF THE HYDRO ONE HEPX 200 20-Axle Schnabel.

An O scale model of this Schnabel car has been custom built. The model has a 31 inch coupled length (without load attached.) It also has a 11 foot reduced pivot point similar to the prototype. The truck bolsters also are articulated to allow better tracking since each set of trucks will pivot independently.

With a typical scale load of 40 feet attached the overall car length will be 41 inches coupled.

The control shed has a removable roof and inside details including a control panel and hydraulic system.  The doors on the control shed open up as well as the rear panel that allows servicing of the hydraulic system.  Not all detailing has been completed and many more fine details need to be added.

More photos attached!

Notice the O scale figure standing on the car for a size comparison.

This Schnabel car was built for Ontario Hydro  by National Steel Car Limited of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1973. Ontario Hydro became Hydro One in 2001. This car was placed in service in April of 1976.  It is still in service.

These are all models for my personal collection. The Schnabel cars require heavy invested hours to design and build. About half the time is just coming up with sketches of the various components. Upwards of 80 hours to design, construct and paint.

These are all O scale operational models.  See also my large collection of heavy duty depressed center flatcars. I like "big" cars. These have been posted on OGR.

I have built O scale models of most of the Schnabels in use today.  This includes the Westinghouse WECX 801 (with 36 axles it is probably the largest O scale model in existance).

Model shown with load attached is over 6 feet in length.
