I am using 1"x4" pine board as risers.  The subroadbed is "cookie-cutter" in design (i.e. cut from a sheet of plywood).  Make sure your subroadbed is at least 1/2" thick and adequately braced so that you don't get low spots or sagging.  Poor roadbed construction really destroys track / engine operations.  And it's something you live with for a long time.  Don't ask me how I know.

Hi Doug,

 

I have used the incline sets from Woodland Scenic on my layout with good success.  Typically I use these on curved inclines as it is really simple.  My straight inclines are more of a cookie cutter approcach.

 

Here is a photo, I used atlas track and cork roadbed.

While the pieces are not scale specific, it worked just fine for me.
