I'm heading down to MD on Monday to take the two day class, any surprises I should be looking for?

Maybe email Ted or Dave Hikel and see?
I think there were posts about this a while back?
I did a quick search, but I'm probably not using the right terms.
Your right John. (ASC) Authorized service center. You'll definetly want to get the test fixtures. I'm sure you will be doing Proto suonds and PS2. When you see the PS3 test fixtures it comes with a 39 page instruction book. The PS2 is straight forward.
Everyone is nice down there. Not sure who is there or not there anymore. It's a neat place. Jeff Strank is nice guy. It'll be a lot of information and fun.
Have fun and good luck.
Ralph
There you go!
I remember seeing pictures posted of the class from someone?
I can't find them either. Probably under a different topic.
You have a pretty good handle on things and certainly have a more extensive electronics background than what is required for being a service tech.
Who was the shop that sponsored you?
Good luck,
Dave

Hi John,
I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. There's nothing too earth shattering in the class. You will leave with a VERY valuable binder of info. Probably the biggest change for you after the class will be enjoying full access to the parts bin. You'll also get a good introduction to the (soon to be upgraded) parts ordering system.
Have fun!
DOH! I guess I had a senior moment with that ASC lingo.
The surprise I would be careful of is the State Trooper Speed traps between PA and MD:-) G

Darn, I think I need to go for personal reasons!!!
You get to spend a day fixing customers engines that were sent back.
While you are there, ask them why parts are so hard to come by And why it takes so long to get them.
Can't imagine a better candidate!!! Glad to hear the news. Good luck.

Sounds like it should be very interesting and informative. I'm looking forward to more information than the end user has, it will make fixing this stuff easier. I plan on obtaining the test sets as soon as their available, taking a locomotive apart to test boards is getting old!
The folks at MTH I've communicated with are Jeff Stank and Brian Yost. It'll be nice to put a face to some of the names as well.
I have to make time to go meet Midge in parts and tell her what a great job she does.
I'll dust off the radar detector for the trip.
Have a good time! And a safe trip.
Larry
I'll try to contain my speeding impulse on the way. It shouldn't be as hard now that I've traded my 350Z for something much more mundane, but much more practical.

You just wanted something with more "aquisition room" in the trunk for trains...didn't yah?
DOH! I guess I had a senior moment with that ASC lingo.
Hey, I was thinking "Aquisition of Stuff Cheap"...didn't know you had to be certified for that!? ...if that's the case then I'm certifiable!
I'm going to York, needed more room for trains! I guess I better start saving if I want to fill the back.
Don't be the one person in the class that is always asking questions and gets the instructor ****ed off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was stuck with a bunch of Mo-Mo's in my class These two guys named Hikel and Minarek were disrupting the class so much I didn't learn a thing
Good luck John, with your knowledge you should breeze right thru the class.
I'm surprised that they're still repairing circuit boards, the Navy has been in a pull & swap program for years (of course there's few places with the budget the Navy has).
Give us a report when you get back
I have to make time to go meet Midge in parts and tell her what a great job she does.
From what I been told, once you become a tech you no longer get to deal with Midge. She's for consumer customers only (weird I know)
Best of luck.
Ben,
I didn't learn a thing
Now, that explains a lot!
It promises to be an interesting couple of days, looking forward to it. I'll try not to **** off the instructors.
If they can demonstrate the technique and tools necessary to change a 5V board driver FETs without cooking the board, I'll have some spare boards. That seems to be a common failure, at least in the ones I've gotten recently.
I have changed those fet successfully. When the repair doesn't work, it usually means some other component was the issue. Usually a processor problem. G
John now you can help Barry answer DCS PS sytem questions. I'm sure he'll appreciate some more input.
John, Any info on the fix for failed Rev L TIUs would be appreciated.
Pete
I'm not sure I see much about fixing TIU's in the course materials, I think they want to see them back at the ranch for repair.
I know the one I sent back they replaced a bunch of tri-state drivers and added some Zener diodes, presumably for protection of the drivers. Mine was missing the DCS signal on all channels.
Marty,
John now you can help Barry answer DCS PS sytem questions
Actually, as I recall, the class really doesn't speak much to actual DCS operation.
While John may, indeed, pick up some new-to-him information from knowledgeable DCS attendees, he's not likely to get much from the course except how to utilize the Loader Program for software upgrades, sound file transfers and cloning remotes.
Barry...I'm sure he'll appreciate some more input
It would be difficult to envision getting more input from John than we do at present.

Just think guys we could have 2 to 3 whole days with John not posting at all. will the OGR board survive? Please tune in for the results.
I'll take my laptop David, I don't want to deprive you.
John,
I'm sure that you'll enjoy yourself, and as already indicated you'll come away with some additional knowledge and the binder of information. I first attended in 2007 and returned last year for the PS-3 course and each time I found it to be a friendly environment.

Oh darn,

Exton, you're right around the corner from me.
Best of luck John; HAVE A GREAT TIME !!!!!!
Best,
Dave
Thanks Dave.
