Hi While at the train display at Hiller Aviation Museum, one the display layouts had a Lionel Shell Oil Derrick and pump. The motor ran the beam etc with continuous motor. My old one had the up and down movement controlled by a relay. I am replacing my old one and would like to know which oil derrick came with continuous run motor. I see the one on the layout was a Shell version but are there others??? I want to buy one.

MTH made a continuous running oil derrick. Looks very much like the original Lionel version, but has a Sunoco sign.

Mike, the early Sunoco oil derricks, invented in the 50’s by Lionel, used a bi-metallic strip to actuate the “nodding head” of the Derrick. In more recent times, they’ve used an electrical board for continuous action. Here’s my modern version on my layout. It’s probably about ten years or so old, and still runs well.
