I've been intrigued with the idea of modeling the famous, but now extinct, Old Man of the Mountain feature that was located in New Hampshire. Has anyone done this, and if so, what material was used?
Layers of pink Styrofoam carved to shape with a serrated knife would probably be easiest. You could cover the carvings with a thin layer of plaster or just a thick coat of flat latex paint.
My "elephant rock" is pink Styrofoam coated with Structolite plaster. With a few more gouges of the knife, it could be a face in profile.
Yes, I have done this with pink foam painted brown. It is not a detailed model of the Old Man on the Mountain, but many who have visited my layout instantly comment "Oh, isn't that the Old Man on the Mountain?". I live in Shrewsbury, MA so locals all recognize the sight.
