Here is another idea for operations along with checking out a highly detailed set of 12 MTH Premier GN Western Fruit Express cars--all different numbers.  These were my birthday present on June 17th.  I hope that you all enjoy the video....

The Glacier Line Update:

OPERATIONS: ICING!
Western Fruit Express, a subsidiary of the Great Northern Railway, was created in 1923. This was the beginning of food products being distributed nationally as in the times before most food products were locally grown. Ice was packed through the hatches in the tops of these reefers to keep perishables protected. Mechanical refrigeration didn't begin until the early 1950s.

These 12 WFE reefers in the video all have different numbers, and are produced in the MTH Premier Line--full-scale "O". The train in this video is beautifully done head to tail! The caboose, MTH Premier, was painted/weathered by my wife, Connie, and me. The decals were made by use as well through the use of Great Northern Railway Historical Society resources. You can't get more realistic than reproducing an original historical decal!

Part of our future operations will be to take these cars to the icing platforms in our Shelby and Whitefish areas to be refreshed with ice to keep the products contained within these cars protected. This is yet another possible for realistic operations on a model railroad in any scale.

Check out the other videos on the channel as well. These almost all involve the design and operations possible on model railroads.

You can become your own Model Railroad Custom Designer! Having operations on your pike will enhance your interest and provide interactive opportunities for you and your friends.

I encourage you to become an active engaged involved participant in your railroad's operations. It is so much more fun than just sitting back and watching. Become part of your own train crew!

Happy Birthday, John!   Great video, great layout, great train.  Oh, to have that kind of space!  You and your wife did a nice job.  And, so good of you to "plug" the local historical societies.  Those relationships can be mutually beneficial as each side learns and shares more.

I love operations and will look forward to that phase when you get the icing going.

"Oh, to have that kind of space!"  But, and it's the "but" that ruins it!  When you are blessed with "space", you have more to maintain.  I always dreamed big and hoped and prayed, that one day I would finally have a basement layout.  Now I do.  I'm very, very, very glad that I have a core of six people who consistently help me to maintain/clean/wire/update this layout.  It is great fun!  But, it is also work.  Never having had a layout of this size before it never dawned on me the upkeep involved.  I'm not complaining, I'm just saying.  Thank goodness for the core Glacier Line Crew!  That's Connie, Gregg, Chris, Rod, Joseph and me.  And I've had additional assistance from Bill, Phillip, James, Jim and Jack.

I'm beyond fortunate and lucky to have all these people.  Hopefully, about twenty-five to thirty years from now, when I can no longer climb the stairs, if I last that long, I'm going to have an "L" shape shelf layout on two walls shuttling cars between different sidings waiting to go on the main.  I'll be on my rolling chair rolling back and forth...and I'm not kidding!

And I'm not going if I can't take Hustle Muscle with me! Talk about a devoted Great Northern Railway Historical Society guy!
