I am in the process of culling my collection, which, of course, means selling them, which then means trying to determine a fair price. I am not very good at this so perhaps some more seasoned sellers in the past can help me set a price.

The first item is a restored Lionel Standard Gauge #124 Station. The prices for this I have seen are all over the map.The next is an electrified yellow and blue Hafner engine with smoke, reverse and working headlight along with six cars ( tank, box, four varying colored gondolas and a caboose. This one has me really stumped. Any advice is appreciated. Theres no reference material on prices I have found which is understandable for the converted Hafner engine.

Bruce, the Hafner set I bought at York this spring and posted pictures of on the recent Hafner thread here,

https://ogrforum.com/topic/hafner-trains

I paid $200 for, which might help give some kind of a base line.  You know as well as anyone that once a piece is modified it may decrease the value to "collectors" but may actually increase the value to someone who really likes the idea as much as you did.

just as with Marx or Flyer, not all Hafner are created equal.  the blue 1110 Hafner freight train you purchased is much less common than the late 2000-type yellow shell.  just from the pictures you posted, by the way, $200 was a great deal in my opinion.  i've seen fairly nice R. G. or B. #1110's alone sell for more than that.

have to say that i'm not a big fan of electrically modified Hafner, but it will probably appeal to some tinplaters who like the design, but shy away from clockwork drives (they are generally more operator attention dependent).

by the way, here's something i just realized a few weeks ago.  if you want to point to a certain response within a string, first open that string by clicking on the "permalink" icon that is in the header of all responses.  you'll then notice that the same string opens, but auto-scrolls to the specific response you're interested in pointing to...

like this

not so much with this case, but really helps when the string goes to multiple pages.

cheers...gary

Gary, thank you, at the time I didn't know if it was a good price or not, I really knew nothing about Hafner... not much less than I know now.

I might be one of these.  Either that, or set up a little two-rail windup layout where i can reach all the track easily and there isn't that center rail to get in the way.  There's a tab on the bottom of the Hafner engine that hangs down and snags on the center rail.  Bell ringer mechanism made to bump along the ties of 2 rail track?

To All

I really appreciate the guidance on valuating these items, otherwise I would still be going in circles about this. I'll be posting these in the For Sale forum on Monday. I think $150.00 is a fair price for the Hafner set and $100.00 for the station The station needs inside roof cleats but thats the only flaw. Ill post pictures if anyone might be interested over there.
