I´m working on a new switching layout using 022 switches, and I have a question.

One of my end modules will be a three track siding/reversing loop inside a mountain so I can store trains not in use.

I want the indicator bulbs on the switch controllers to work, but don´t want the lights on my switch motors to be visible from inside the mountain.

Will the 022 switch and lighted controller still work OK if I remove the bulbs from the switch motors inside the mountain?

Thank you,

ken

Yes.

Absolutely the switch works without a bulb in the switch.  Just serviced a half dozen 022's last month and removed the housing, lantern and bulb to service and test each switch using the direct power plug to power the switch.

EDIT:  I saw grj's reply and posted my reply ONLY because KenL might not know that grj is the TRUTH in all matters electrical.

KenL,

If you are thinking about the massive power draw of each of the 022 switches, replace the regular bulbs in the switch and the 2 in the controller with LED's, it works great, and lights well also, and yes the 022 switches do work just as well without any bulbs at all, I did this in several of the 072's that were unseen on my larger layout, to help keep the power draw down.

Cool! Thank you all for the help.

I was thinking about removing all the bulbs in my mountain 022´s not because of power issues but because I didn´t want green and red lights shining out from inside the tunnels. I was worried that somehow all three bulbs had to work to make the controller indicators work OK. There´s a Model Z transformer around here somewhere so power is no issue.

Also, I´m giving a lot of thought to running LED´s in all my equipment because I don´t want anything to melt like my old switch lanterns used to do.
