Brass is class!

That thing is really ugly! I don't know if I have ever seen a J model's front end look that completely out of wack!!! I wouldn't give you two cents for that thing!

That skyline casing looks nothing like the smooth sheetmetal my Dad made!

The Sunset J were poor runners. and modeled after the N&W J #610 so is painted incorrect. I dumped my and would never by another one. Kohs will be doing the J  and it will be $5000 plus and a long wait.

I would like to see that paint job to decide for myself. The Sunset J that I used to have wasn't painted. And, I did not see a Sunset J on the Allegheny site.

When you say N&W J 611 are you looking for the 611 excursion version or the 611 in it's original form or a N&W J in any version?  I believe Overland made 5 versions which included the un-streamlined J1 "War Baby" and the 611 excursion with two bulbs in the headlight.   Overland blew them out at the end and you could find them for around $1,500.  I bought a war baby and another version in that price range. I only test ran mine as they sit in the display case.

I have several Sunset J models.  Never had a running problem but never saw one "factor painted" either.  I believe they all came unpainted and if the paint is bad it's due to the custom painter or modeler doing a poor job.  They show up on ebay all the time but many are over priced in my opinion.  I test ran them and they are ok.  I have several friends whose engines run great after very little work.

The Williams came in 3 rail and 2 rail.  The 3 rail show up on ebay all the time and can be had for very little.  The 2 rail show up but not as often as the 3 rail.  The paint is beautiful and with a little work the model can look pretty good.  Paint the tires, dull her down to your taste and check how high she sits.  Mine all ran fine out of the box.

When the house is finished being restored/remodeled  next year one of my projects will be properly numbering the Js to have as many different numbers as I can and put some different trains together.   Monday I was finishing lunch in Bedford, Virginia at the old N&W station, looked up and there went 611 steaming back to Roanoke from Spencer.  I was surprised at her speed.  What a lovely sight!!!!

The Sunset Models all came unpainted. As VGN stated there are 5 versions of the N&W J. The Sunset Models needed some work to run smoothly. The Sunset version is good for #604 -610 only. The 611-613 had difference in tenders etc. The model is not correct for 611 and will need to be renumbered to be right. The Williams model is what you pay for. Rivet detail left off the J, incorrect tenders and so forth. A good toy stand in. The mth and Lionel made better models. Williams dump the J's big time on the market because of poor sales and left dealers holding the bag.

The last sunset model sold for around $650. and are often on the bay as are the Williams. The last OMI sold over $2200. The OMI list for the J was $2750 retail. The OMI N&W J model are very hard to find.

Jim, You are correct, The problem with J models is the top shroud and lower shroud point below the nose are usually modeled wrong.

Bob,

If memory serves, the flywheel was connected to a universal (or something like that) and also wasn't concentric.  Trued it up and it ran marginally better, redid the universal/flywheel connection and it ran better yet.  Just like you, I removed the flywheel and it ran much better.  Gave it back to the owner and told him to dump it.  He did.

I'm looking for the excursion version of the overland J.
