I use this - it is essentially a folded over figure 8 (the right most pair of switches is the center cross). The bottom two switches are for connecting to the outer loop (not pictured).

A few feature highlights:

  •  Allows reversing in both directions
  • The non-derail feature of the rightmost pair of switches allows one to automate path of the train so that it passes through in alternate directions as it navigates the figure 8.
  • One can use the top half as a rather large siding while the bottom and upper middle path is used as a circuit for another train
  • A few spurs for those who like to switch or have industry can be incorporated (as suggested by the 3 spurs)

Garrett,

I would use at least 036 FastTrack if you want to make sure you can run most of your engines and rolling stock on your FT.  DoubleD's Ft engineering layout is absolutely correct, however this is a very tight layout.  Even 036 limits the engines and rolling stock you will be able to use.  I build a lot of FT layouts, the 031 is extremely tight for decent sized engines and rolling stock, especially if you are running any Tin Plate.

Even my Bar Top FT Layout is 036 except for the inner most oval which is 031 RealTrax!

This is one I worked up using vertically stacked loops in a 5x9 space.  The original track layout is an example from the Fastrack book, so I tweaked it here and added scenery.

What radius did you use and how steep an incline to get to "What Height"? It is a nice layout for limited space.

Thank you!  I had intended it to be for O-27 equipment and feature operating accessories.  The curves are O-36 Fasttrack, and the elevation is a standard 6" for stock bridge piers.  Therefore the steepness of the incline is a bit less than when people construct an overlapping figure 8 from O-27 track.

The whole thing is meant to fit on a ping-pong table.

Attached is the original design file if anyone wants to play with it.  It is using the RR-Track software.
