Use hobby acrylics from Walmart. Except: Splurge on a tube of good Paynes Gray. Cut it with white. You want a bit of variability for most stone. I like to do that by underpainting a few stones with various reds or browns. Burnt umber and raw sienna are good, too. Don't be afraid to mix your own colors. It is not hard to get the hang of. Make yourself a palette out of foam core. You will feel like Picasso.
