paint scheme timeline question

I have both Lionel R 27 and r-16 sets and have been mulling over painting a pair of add on cars , I like the "David Gunn red, black and silver paint scheme. since i left NYC back in 1988, i did not get to see any of these trains other than in pictures and would like to know if this paint job was ever mixed in with the older silver and blue equipment or were they run in solid consist of the same paint jobs. Also if any forum members might also know if the R-16s ever got this red ,black,silver paint scheme, or were they retired before ever getting this paint scheme. i am trying to figure out wether or not i can get away with just a pair of cars or commit to a whole train, thanks, Galo 3rd.
