Phooey. All the paint I have right now is enamel. Before I go out and spend money foolishly, can someone recommend a good water-based paint to use? I bought a used mountain/tunnel, which is somewhat painted, but I want to totally repaint it.

Try some acrylic tubes form Michaels, Hobby Lobby or maybe WalMart. Its cheap, comes in all colors and cleans with water. You can seal it with flatcote later or add groundcover. The paint is like toothpaste and can be thinned with water or alchohol for easier application. Good Luck

go down to home depot and look for OOPS paints that are in a brown.
I like to use a Val-Spar Textured paint called Manhattan Mist it's speckled and simulates Granite . It's a great base and will allow you to glue rocks in place or finish with different grasses and foliage . I get it at Lowes.

Oh course, I don't know how extensively you are planning to scenic your tunnel, but may I suggest you paint the inside as well as the outside. If you don't want to fuss too much w/ the inside, perhaps, paint it a dark charcoal or brown. Better yet, if the adventure pleases you, additionally line the inside of the tunnel walls immediately inside the portals w/ stone walls or wood beam walls, such as I have pictured here from my layout, emplace a groundcover, and ballast the track some distance into the tunnel beyond the portals. In fact, a friend of mine went so far as to place tiny lighting inside the tunnels, which had a delightful effect when viewed from the outside. He felt it was well worth the effort, and that from a guy who retro-fitted the lighting!.
