Got some experimental results and a question about painting Plastruct white Butyrate plastic tubing. I am looking for the best method of painting without resulting in the paint chipping off the plastic. In the worst case I can use my finger nail to scratch the paint off fairly easily.

I have tried several experiments varying surface preparation including:

  • doing nothing

  • cleaning with mineral spirits

  • wiping with steel wool

  • and sanding with 220 grit

I have tried several manufacturers' paints including:

  • Testors spray enamels including their primers

  • Krylon fusion for Plastic

  • A couple of different Rustoeleum primers for plastic

To date the method that has worked the best (though not a cure all) is cleaning with mineral spirits followed by steel wool then either Testor's Zinc Chromate primer or Rustoelumn Automotive Plastic primer.

Has anyone found a better method?

Thanks

Joe

Joe,

I have painted Plastruct tubing for about thirty years with Krylon. I have since switched to Painters Touch by Rustoleum because Krylon changed the formula. I have never tried to scratch off the paint, but I probably could.

One thing you could do is apply a primer spray first and then top coat. Another thing to do would be sand the pipe with steel wool or a light grit sandpaper to give the paint an anchor pattern to adhere to. One other method would be to clean the pipe with alcohol prior to painting to remove any oils or release agents that may be used during the extrusion process.

I am too lazy to do any of the above and I just paint the pipe and hope it turns out okay.
